North Carolina Wesleyan College’s new band director, Tony Sawyer, will be the featured guest on “The Morning Show” on WHIG-TV, cable channel 17, on Thursday morning, June 26, at 8:20. The program will be broadcast live and possibly may be re-run at other times on WHIG.
Sawyer will talk about Wesleyan’s growing band and music program, including the pep band, jazz band, Wesleyan Singers, and Gospel Choir. Sawyer wants to let musicians in the community know that there are opportunities for them to participate in the college’s music program. “I am just looking to see if there are any local community members, regardless of age, that might wish to participate in our programs,” Sawyer said.
North Carolina Wesleyan’s new Pep Band entertained more than 1,000 athletes and spectators who poured into the Rocky Mount Sports Complex on April 10 for the start of the USA South Conference Spring Championships. Opening ceremonies for the athletic competition welcomed teams from several states ranging from Virginia to Alabama.
The Pep Band performed prior to the opening ceremonies as well as after the ceremonies were completed. To see a YouTube video of the Pep Band playing “More Than A Feeling” by Boston at the Sports Complex, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnKtwmvdUpw
The Pep Band was added to NC Wesleyan’s music program last fall under Tony Sawyer’s direction. He is a percussionist with impressive experience combining music and technology. Before coming to NC Wesleyan, he directed marching band, basketball pep band, and wind ensemble, and taught in the Music Production and Recording Arts degree program at Elon University. He has directed bands at the State University of West Georgia and has taught percussion at Clayton State University. His extensive music experience ranges from teaching private percussion lessons to performing with orchestras and bands all over the United States, as well as teaching music production/technology.
Wesleyan’s Pep Band is open to all NC Wesleyan students of any major, plus community musicians who would like to join. To learn more about the band, contact Tony Sawyer at email@example.com.
