Wesleyan Runners Support “Dash for Cash” Scholarship

In spite of a cold rain, 16 North Carolina Wesleyan College students and several staff members traveled to Greenville, N.C., on Saturday, December 8, to take part in the Reindeer Dash for Cash 10 Miler and 5K Race.

The annual race is a fund raiser for college scholarships in memory of Christopher Cash, Sr., a 1993 NC Wesleyan graduate who was killed  in June 2004 at age 36 near Baqouba, Iraq, when Iraqi insurgents attacked his armored vehicle with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.

Cash was committed to helping others: his family, his friends, his co-workers, his community, and his country. His memory remains ever present in the hearts and minds of those whose lives he touched and inspired with his care and generosity. His legacy of giving to others is carried on in part through college scholarships in his name. These are currently awarded to students attending North Carolina Wesleyan College, East Carolina University, and Pitt Community College. Scholarships also are awarded through the North Carolina National Guard Education Foundation.

Cash was a captain in the North Carolina National Guard who served with the 30th Heavy Separate Brigade, which deployed to Iraq in February 2004. He was commander of Alpha Company of the1st Battalion, 120th Infantry, based in Jacksonville, N.C. He was with the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division for four years before joining the National Guard.

At Wesleyan, he earned his B.S. degree in physical education and graduated cum laude. He earned his master’s degree from East Carolina University in 2002 and worked at ViQuest, a health and fitness center in Greenville.

During his senior year at Wesleyan, Cash was the first recipient of the Don Scalf Scholarship, which honors the retired Wesleyan athletic director and coach. Scalf said of Cash, “I was very pleased that he was given the scholarship, because he was such an outstanding student.”

He was posthumously awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious service and a Purple Heart for being a combat infantryman injured in battle.

The Reindeer Dash for Cash is designated as a 501(c)3 by the IRS. All contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by the law. For more information about how you can participate or give, please click on the following link:
