North Carolina Wesleyan College will hold its annual December Commencement at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 14, in Minges Auditorium of the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts.
The 162 graduating seniors include 20 from Rocky Mount, with others from throughout North Carolina as well as Florida, New York, and Virginia. The Commencement also marks the first time that graduates have included students who have completed their degrees through Wesleyan’s Aspire Program in Wilmington. Wesleyan offers degree programs at nine locations in the state, from Raleigh to the coast.
Commencement speaker will be Lieutenant Colonel Mike Morgan, a 1989 Wesleyan graduate who received the Silver Star award, the nation’s third highest war-time medal, for his valor in Afghanistan in March 2010. Morgan served the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division at the time of his recognition for his part in thwarting an insurgent ambush directed at a U.S. Army engineer unit. Morgan was air mission commander for two OH-58 Kiowa Warrior helicopters that arrived in support of the unit.
Morgan also has earned two Distinguished Flying Crosses and an Army Commendation Medal with Valor.
As a Wesleyan student, Morgan majored in criminal justice, played soccer, and took part in the college’s ROTC program.
Admission to the graduation program is limited to reserved ticket holders.
