Rocky Mount, NC—Dewey G. Clark, a 1982 graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan College, has been elected to a four-year term as chairman of his alma mater’s Board of Trustees. He had served as vice-chairman of the board for the past four years.
Clark succeeds Velma H. Johnson, who had served as Chairman of the Board since 2009 and who will continue to serve.
U.S. Army General (Ret.) H. Hugh Shelton, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1997 to 2001 and a native of Edgecombe County, joined the board as vice-chairman.
“Wesleyan is certainly pleased and fortunate to have Dewey Clark and General Shelton in leadership positions on our board,” said Wesleyan President Jim Gray. “We look forward to their guidance and vision for the future of the college.
“At the same time, Wesleyan is very grateful to Vel Johnson for her outstanding dedication and leadership over the past four years. The college is a better place today because of her service on the board, and Wesleyan thanks her for that.”
Dewey Clark earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration and history from Wesleyan and his master’s degree in business administration from Campbell University. He currently is completing his doctorate in management from Argosy University and will be defending his dissertation, “Leadership Lessons of Joseph,” in mid-December. As a Wesleyan student, he was listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. After graduating, he served Wesleyan’s admissions office for eight years.
Since 1990, he has been employed as executive director of strategic planning at MBM Corporation, with headquarters in Rocky Mount. He has received the Jaycee Merit Award, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, the Bobby Sawyer Award, and is active in Englewood Baptist Church. Occasionally he teaches operations management at Wesleyan.
U.S. Army General (Ret.) H. Hugh Shelton
General Shelton is recognized as one of the leading military figures of our time and a war hero. He describes his illustrious career in his recent memoir, Without Hesitation: The Odyssey of an American Warrior.
General Shelton is also known as the founder of the General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Center based at his alma mater, North Carolina State University. His Leadership Center program is offered throughout the state in the summer, including at North Carolina Wesleyan at the Gateway Technology Center. The program teaches young men and women some of the values-based leadership skills that led General Shelton to his own success.
“I was first asked to join the Board of Trustees by President Gray,” Shelton said. “I thought about just what a great college Wesleyan is and about what it means to Eastern North Carolina as a college and what it can do for the people here…. I thought this was a great opportunity that I have to try to give back to the community and to try to help in any way, shape, or form that I can to advance the mission of the college, to try to make it ‘be all it can be,’ to use an Army phrase…. I think the college is growing to the point now that it’s touching people internationally, not just in North Carolina…. And so I thought, ‘This is a great opportunity for me to give back,’ and I’m very pleased to be associated with this great college.”
