Rocky Mount, N.C.—Local civic leader and retired businessman Robert R. Mauldin has received special recognition from the Board Trustees at North Carolina Wesleyan College. In recent official action by the Board, the college established a scholarship in his honor that will be awarded annually to one or more qualified students from the Rocky Mount Preparatory School, where he served 15 years as chairman of the board of directors.
“We are delighted to honor Bob Mauldin through this college scholarship for young people,” said Vel Johnson, chair of the NC Wesleyan Board of Trustees. “This prestigious award will add to his legacy of supporting education in our community while providing recognition and financial support for many deserving students into the future.”
Mauldin has demonstrated his lifelong commitment to education through his strong ties to both educational institutions. He was the founding chairman of the board at Rocky Mount Prep, which was one of the first charter schools in North Carolina. He has been a dedicated leader and committed to advancement of the school from its early days on the property of the former Tarrytown Mall, through the transition to an award-winning school with a modern building and attractive campus adjacent to NC Wesleyan.
Known for his exceptional leadership, boundless energy, and generosity, Mauldin has served in many capacities at NC Wesleyan. He has been a member and chair of the Board of Trustees and is now a Trustee Emeritus. In addition, he has been chair of the Finance Committee, member of the Board of Visitors, chair of the Day for Wesleyan, a Wesleyan Society member, and involved with the Friends of the Library.
Mauldin has served the Rocky Mount community as a driving force in business, economic development, and through the charitable work of the Futrell-Mauldin Community Foundation, which bears his name. He has received numerous accolades as a civic leader, including the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award for service.
Now retired, Mauldin and his wife Pat continue to support Rocky Mount Prep and NC Wesleyan, sharing their time and resources to help both schools flourish. The NCWC Trustees established the Mauldin Scholarship to honor his service to these schools and to the Rocky Mount community by creating a tangible way to invest in students of talent, promise, and need.
The Robert R. Mauldin Scholarship will be given annually to one or more students graduating from Rocky Mount Preparatory School and entering NC Wesleyan as freshmen. The initial funding has been set at $5,000 for each entering class. The selected students will be eligible to continue receiving the award each year by remaining in good standing at the college.
