Annual Pageant is a Gift to the Community

Rocky Mount, NC:  The holiday spirit is growing as preparations get underway for “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” at North Carolina Wesleyan College.  Hosted by the college as an annual gift to the community, the family-friendly free event has delighted audiences for more than 5 years.

The curtain goes up on Thursday November 29, 2012 at 7:30 pm for one performance of this special story.  The community is invited to enjoy the show in the comfortable seats in the Minges Auditorium of the NC Wesleyan College Dunn Center for the Performing Arts on the Rocky Mount campus.

Rebecca Staylor

Soccer player Rebecca Staylor will perform as Maxine.

The Pageant is actually a humorous play written by Barbara Robinson. The plot features the belligerent Herdsman children who decide to participate in a church Christmas pageant.  Hilarity ensues as the dismayed church members struggle to manage the mayhem in their production of the Christmas story.

The hour-long play is directed by Wesleyan professor of theatre Roger Drake.  The talented cast involves children as young as 3, college students, and community members taking on a wide range of roles including angels, church ladies, firemen, shepherds, and wise men.

Tammy Robinson

Staff member Tammy Robinson will play the role of Mrs. Armstrong.

As an added feature this year, the Pageant cast is asking the community to help support two local initiatives.  One of the young cast members, 10-year old Joshua Moore, recently launched an annual toy drive for children in need.  In support of his efforts, the cast is asking the audience to consider bringing unwrapped new or gently used children’s toys or books to be given to children who may not otherwise receive a gift during the holidays.

In addition, the audience is asked to consider bringing canned goods for donation to a local food pantry.  All donated items will be placed under the college Christmas tree in the Dunn Center lobby.  Santa Claus will be stopping by after the Pageant to check out the collection and to visit with all of the children who attend the performance.
