Rocky Mount, N.C. – On April 28, 2011, 78 students participated in the State Finals Mathematics Contest in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II at North Carolina Wesleyan College. These students represented 40 schools across Eastern North Carolina, with 31 competing in Algebra I, 27 in Geometry, and 20 in Algebra II.
An invitation-only event, participating students had previously performed in the top 10 percent at regional contests held at qualifying sites. Those sites were East Carolina University, Chowan University, Elizabeth City State University, UNC-Pembroke, Coastal Carolina Community College, and Wake Technical College.
Participants arrived on campus for registration by 10:00 a.m. and were treated to brief message from President Jim Gray prior to testing. After testing was completed, the students enjoyed lunch in Wesleyan’s dining hall before ending the day with an awards ceremony. There, trophies were presented to the top three performers in each subject area.
Other sites that offer the same tests for the State Finals Mathematics Contest in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II are UNC-Greensboro and UNC-Asheville. Results from the three sites were combined to identify the top five students across the state.
The State Finals Contest is co-sponsored by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Financial support is given by EMC Corporation, Duke Energy, and the Art of Problem Solving.
