North Carolina Wesleyan College is fortunate to offer scholarship through the generosity of various donors. These scholarships are awarded based on the wishes and criteria established by passionate donors. They can be contributed to at any time, as well. Following is a list of the endowed scholarships and the criteria established.
George I. Alden Trust Scholarship
Established in 2001 by a three-to-one endowment challenge grant from The George I. Alden Trust, this fund is for general, need-based financial aid to economically disadvantaged students.
Alumni Scholarship Fund
Established in 2007 by the North Carolina Wesleyan College Alumni Association, this fund is distributed to children, grandchildren, or dependents of North Carolina Wesleyan College alumni. Preference for the scholarship is given to an upper class student, with a minimum GPA of 2.75, who has demonstrated financial need and has high personal character. Veterans of the Armed Services are also eligible to receive this scholarship.
Miles Frederick Anderson Scholarship Fund
Established in 2004 by North Carolina Wesleyan College English Professor, Dr. Vivienne M. Anderson, this scholarship is in memory of her son after he passed away in 2002. Preference for the scholarship will be given to a junior or senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher and actively pursuing a major in biology, chemistry, environmental science or pre-medicine.
Vivan Peele Aycock Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 1986 by Sally Peele Smith in honor of her sister, this scholarship is to attract top quality students to NCWC. The scholarship is open to any new student majoring in any field. The criteria for awarding this scholarship will include the applicant’s academic record, personal character, relevant extracurricular activities and financial need.
Alice A. and Guy E. Barnes Scholarship Fund
Established in 1998 with a term endowment by Trustee Emeritus, Guy Barnes and his wife, Alice, this scholarship provides aid to students from Nash and Edgecombe Counties. Preference is given to those who attended either Nash or Edgecombe Community College.
Laura Elizabeth Boice Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 2001 by Laura Elizabeth Boice to honor the Eleanor White Dare Chapter, National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, this scholarship is given to students from Edgecombe, Nash, or Wilson Counties who have shown through community involvement an interest in history, historical preservation, and/or historical research.
C. L. and Anna P. Bonney Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 1968 by the estate of Anna P. Bonney, this scholarship provides aid to deserving students with academic promise and financial need.
Betsey M. Boyd Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2007 by Judith K. Boyd ’93, in memory of her mother. Preference for this scholarship is given to students involved in the Wesleyan Singer, Wesleyan Jazz Ensemble, or other College sponsored music program. The student must demonstrate academic achievement and good personal character.
Robert Russell Braswell Scholarship
Established in memory of Robert Russell Braswell by Hazel Braswell, this scholarship is given to a student from North Carolina based on financial need, personal character, scholastic achievement, leadership, citizenship and contribution to community spirit.
John C. Bullock Scholarship Fund
Established in 2006 by John and Jean Bullock, this scholarship is to honor the life and accomplishments of John C. Bullock, a former member of the College’s Board of Trustees. This scholarship is open to any student.
Christopher S. Cash Memorial Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 2005 by Dawn Cash with contributions from family, friends and proceeds of the Reindeer Dash for Cash 10 Miler and 5k, in memory of Dawn’s husband, Captain Christopher S. Cash ’93, who was killed while serving his country in Iraq in 2004. It is to be awarded to a student who exemplifies the qualities and traits of Chris, including service to country and care for others as demonstrated by volunteer service, and leadership initiatives in school and youth organizations. Preference will be given to students with a declared health-related major and/or serving in the military.
David A. Jones Endowed Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 1998 by faculty, staff, family and friends of Dr. David A. Jones to honor him upon his retirement from the College. Preference is given to students who has academic promise, financial need, studying history and have been accepted in the Wesleyan Honor Program.
Joseph Dominic Nassrie Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 2003 by Joseph and Beverly Nassrie in loving memory of their son, who lost his heroic battle to cancer shortly after receiving his BS in Biology from Wesleyan in March, 2003. Preference is given to an upperclassman who demonstrates high academic achievement and is actively pursuing a major in Biology.
Nu Gamma Phi Scholarship Fund
Established in 2006 by the Nu Gamma Phi alumni to honor the 40 year existence of the fraternity at Wesleyan, this scholarship is awarded to an upper-class male student who has exhibited high scholastic achievement and strong personal character, and is committed to strengthening campus life at the College.
Pitt County Memorial Hospital Lights of Love in Memory of Christopher S. Cash
Established in 2007 by Dawn Cash with contributions made to the Pitt County Memorial Hospital Lights of Love fundraiser, this scholarship honors the life and many contributions of Chris Cash, a 1993 graduate of Wesleyan, who lost his life in 2004 while heroically serving his country in Iraq. Preference for this scholarship is given to a rising Junior or Senior who has exhibited good citizenship, high personal character and has a declared major in any health-related field..
Julia Weskett Powers Endowed Music Scholarship Fund
Established in 1990 by James B. Powers to honor his wife in recognition of her love of music and service to education and the community, this scholarship is awarded to a student who is active in the music program at the College.
Corbitt B. Rushing Scholarship Fund
This fund was established in 1993 by contributions made in memory of Corbitt Rushing, a greatly admired professor at the College. Preference is given to a rising senior who maintains a better than average GPA, has good personal character, and participates in relevant extracurricular activities and has an interest in political service.
Don Scalf Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in 1989, Lloyd Nelson ’67 wanted to honor Don Scalf, a beloved Wesleyan Physical Education Instructor and the College’s first basketball coach. Preference is given to a student with financial need, a GPA of 2.5 or higher, personal character, relevant extracurricular activities, motivating interest and is majoring in physical education.
Arch W. Sharer Scholarship Fund
This fund was established by R. Bruce Sharer ’68 in memory of his father, Dr. Arch Sharer, a well-respected Biology Professor at the college. Preference for this scholarship is given to an upper-class student who demonstrates high academic achievement and is actively pursuing a major in either Environmental Science or Biology.
Roger G. Taylor Endowed Scholarship in Honor of Gaile Davenport Taylor
Established in 1997, Roger G. Taylor ’70 wanted to honor his wife, Gaile Davenport Taylor, and assist single female parents. Preference for this scholarship is given to any part or full time single mother in her Junior or Senior academic year with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
