Tiffane Bustos spoke on behalf of Wesleyan scholarship recipients in the Spring of 2009 at a reception that honored scholarship donors:
“When I was asked to make this speech, I was not completely sure what else to say besides ‘thank you.’ What other words could describe the gratitude due to you as our scholarship donors? In my search for actual words, being thankful was replaced with ‘gratefulness’ and ‘appreciation.’ You have stood by us since the beginning—and for some—you have stood with us until the end.
As scholarship donors, you have become the backbone of today’s college education. Without you, many of us would not be here today. As donors, you have given us the chance to expand our education while integrating yourselves into our lives—helping to build our futures. Your influence on us as students may not be seen…but our actions will forever reflect your contributions. With each passing year we become better people, with a goal to make an influence on the world, just as you have had an influence on us.
There never really are words that express the depth of gratitude enough…. However, maybe there is no need for more words. Sometimes the simplest is the best. Therefore, to our scholarship donors, on behalf of the students gathered here today, thank you! Thank you for being present in our lives, for believing in us enough to give us this chance to become something more. Thank you for your constant support throughout the years. We will never forget it.”
