Commencement Information

Assembly of Degree Candidate

Degree candidates should report to the Carlton Boardroom by 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 30th.  The Carlton Boardroom is located in the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts at the south entrance of the building.  Please note that graduates will be ONLY allowed to enter at south entrance.  Honor cords will be given out at this time.  The College Registrar will instruct degree candidates on how to proceed during the ceremony.  The Baccalaureate Service will be held in the beginning of the Commencement ceremony. There is no Commencement rehearsal.


Academic Costume

The academic costume consists of cap, gown, tassel, and shoes.  The cap is an essential part of the academic costume.  In particular, the cap should not be removed at any point during the conferring of degrees. Cap and gown may be picked up at your respective sites. 



Everyone who crosses the stage will receive a diploma cover; however, for those officially graduating, your diploma will be available for you to pick up after the ceremony back at the registration table outside the Carlton Board Room.  Please note that this station will only be open for 1 hour following the ceremony and each student must pick up their own diploma(s) in person.  All financial obligations to the College must be cleared in order to receive your diploma at the commencement exercises. If not, your diploma will be mailed to you once your financial obligations are satisfied. Please be sure that the Registrar and Student Accounts/Business Office has your correct mailing address.



A professional photographer from Grad Images Photography will photograph each graduate as he/she walks across the stage during Commencement.  The pictures will be available to purchase through Grad Images.  The contact for Grad Images is or 1-800-261-2576Grad Images is independent of the College and all questions regarding photographs should be directed to them.


Commencement General Admission Tickets

In this package, each graduate that is participating in the ceremony will have the allotted number of general admission tickets for the reserved seating of their guests. The College is not responsible for lost or misplaced tickets.  Replacement tickets will not be available. 


Admission of Guests

Guests will not be allowed to enter the Dunn Center without a General Admission Ticket.    Dunn Center doors will open at 9:00 a.m.   Guests must be seated by 9:45 a.m. before the procession of the graduates.  All guests should be seated by 9:45 a.m.  The doors to the Dunn Center will be locked at 10:00 a.m. after the ceremony has begun.  Depending on available seats, guest arriving after 10:00 a.m. will be able to go into the overflow seating in Powers Auditorium.  Please be sure your guests understand that they must arrive on time.  Doors will remain locked during the ceremony; therefore guests should not leave the building as they may not be able to re-enter upon exiting. 


Overflow seating/Webcasting

Overflow seating will be available in Powers Auditorium for your guest without a general admission ticket. Overflow seating entrance is on the south side of the Dunn Center. The College will be webcasting graduation for family and friends who are unable to attend the event. The link to the webcast will be available on the front page of the College website: on the day of Commencement.  Webcasting will begin at 9:45 a.m. prior to the beginning of the ceremony.


Admission of Children

Children five and under do not require a Dunn Center Ticket; however, they must sit in someone’s lap. Children six and over require a Dunn Center Ticket.  As a courtesy to others, please be mindful of the noise level that your child/children are creating.  If the child/children are creating a disturbance please escort them to the lobby.


Handicap Seating

If you have guests that require handicapped seating, please contact Susan Autrey at (252) 985-5250 no later than March 31stPlease note there is no waiting area prior to the opening of the doors at 9:00 a.m.  There is handicapped parking available on the north and south sides of the Dunn Center. Please note there is limited handicapped seating and if no previous arrangements have been made, guests may have to sit in a regular seat if no handicap seating is available.
