Dr. Bill Yankosky (Dr. Bill as his students call him) is a Professor of Mathematics and the current Director of the Taylor-Crocker Honors Program. He has taught nearly every math course offered at the college at some point and enjoys teaching a wide variety of courses. Although his dissertation dealt with nilpotent Lie algebras, his current interests involve topics related to teaching mathematics at the college level, linear algebra, abstract algebra and cryptology. He specifically enjoys incorporating cryptologic topics into math courses of various levels.
Dr. Bill has taught at North Carolina Wesleyan College since 2000 and has been the Director of the Honors Program since 2008. During this time he received the Jefferson-Pilot Professorship (2008-2009), the Exemplary Teacher Award (2009-2010) and the NCWC Society of Leadership and Success chapter’s Excellence in Teaching Award (2010-2011). In addition to his work with the Honors Program, Dr. Bill also serves as the faculty advisor and faculty secretary for the mathematics honor society Kappa Mu Epsilon, the national leadership honor society Omicron Delta Kappa, and the freshman honor society Phi Eta Sigma.
Dr. Bill has collaborated with some mathematics majors on cryptology projects that have resulted in publications in such journals as Cryptologia and Mathematics and Computer Education. Additionally, he has solved several problems, some independently and others in collaboration with mathematics majors or math colleagues, which have appeared in the challenge problem sections of the journals MAA Monthly, Mathematics Magazine and The Pentagon.
Outside of his academic life, Dr. Bill has been happily married since 1995 and enjoys spending time with his wife and his two sons. His other hobbies include playing guitar, writing and recording music, walking for exercise, playing Scrabble, and pretty much anything Star Wars related. His favorite TV show is The Big Bang Theory. He is also a big fan of both the Pittsburgh Steelers of the N.F.L. and Manchester United FC of the English Premier League.
