Psychology (B.A. degree) The psychology program provides the student with exposure to the basic areas of the discipline, including research design and analysis, human development, personality and psychopathology, social behavior, learning and cognition, and neuroscience. The curriculum also emphasizes skill development, especially in the areas of writing, oral communication, and quantitative reasoning. Majors are required to take a course in statistics and thirty credits in psychology. There is also a minor in psychology, requiring eighteen credits. Many students choose to augment the basic curriculum by gaining practical experience in an internship. Interns do hands-on work in a variety of mental health, social service, and educational settings, under the supervision of professionals in the field. Other students choose to pursue independent research projects in collaboration with members of the faculty. All psychology students are invited to become involved in extra-curricular activities. Psi Chi is a national honor society for students of superior academic accomplishment, while the Psychology Club is open to all students. These organizations are involved in a variety of social and community service activities. The B.A. degree in psychology prepares students for post- graduate work in psychology, social work, and other fields in the behavioral sciences and helping professions. Psychology majors can also pursue careers in human resources, social services, marketing, government, and a variety of other areas. |
