The sociology program provides the student with tools useful
in understanding the organization of social life. The course work directs the student into
three basic areas: conceptual and research tools, social institutions, and social change.
The curriculum also emphasizes skill development, especially in the areas of reading and
communication, both oral and written. Majors are required to take a course in statistics
and ten courses in sociology. There is also a minor in sociology, requiring six courses. Many students choose to augment the basic curriculum by gaining practical experience in an internship. Interns do hands-on work in a variety of settings under the supervision of professionals in the field. These settings include a wide variety of non-profit organizations as well as public agencies. Other students choose to pursue independent research projects in collaboration with members of the faculty. Pi Gamma Mu is an international honor society in social science open to sociology and other social science students of superior academic accomplishment. New members are inducted each spring. Many professions today require the ability to understand group interactions. Further, it is not unusual for a person to change careers (not jobs, but type of work!) three or more times. Therefore, the study of sociology is excellent preparation for life. The B.A. degree in sociology specifically prepares a student for careers in the public arena of social services as well as the private arena of human services and human resources. Sociology majors can also pursue graduate work in sociology, social work, and other fields in the behavioral sciences and helping professions. |
