Premedicine

North Carolina Wesleyan College offers a Premedicine major for those students who plan to apply for admission either to medical school or to another professional school which offers a post-baccalaureate degree in the health sciences, i.e., dentistry, osteopathy, podiatry or veterinary medicine. Students who wish to apply for admission to such schools should acquire a broad foundation in the natural sciences, mathematics, humanities, and the social sciences. Most schools of medicine require 8 semester hours of biology, 8 semester hours of general chemistry, 8 semester hours of organic chemistry, and 8 semester hours of physics. In addition, many medical schools require a year of English, and courses in the humanities and social sciences. Requirements in mathematics are variable. Because medical schools and other professional schools in the health sciences differ in their entrance requirements, students should confer with the Wesleyan premedical advisory committee early in their freshman year. They are also advised to consult the Medical School Admissions Requirements published by the Association of American Medical Colleges for a complete listing of course requirements for specific schools. Students should plan to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) or the Dental Admission Test (DAT) in the spring preceding their application to a professional school. Many students will take a preparatory course, e.g., Kaplan, to assist them in their preparation for the MCAT.

The College's support for the Premedicine program includes substantial library resources: journals, books, and a collection of Internet links. Learn more about the nuts and bolts of majoring in Premedicine on these four pages:
