Class of 2002
BS in Chemistry
I am now at Temple University in Philadelphia in my second Professional
year of pharmacy school. So far its been great and I am having a good time.
I must say that NCWC gave me the opportunity to grow as an individual. I
picked NCWC for my undergraduate studies because I knew I wanted to be at a
school that had a small population and could give me the help I needed. I am
very grateful for the roles that professors like Dr. Brown, Dr. Kosal, Dr.
Kilgore and especially Dr. Austin played in academic life. The Math and Science
division allowed me to travel to places and be apart of events that would never
have being possible if I had attended a bigger school. The sports program allowed
me to be a part of a team and also taught me how to manage my time due to the
hectic schedule. For all those that played a role in my life, one way or the
other, while at NCWC I am very grateful.

BS in Biology with Minor in Chemistry
I graduated from Duke University's Doctor of Physical Therapy program in
May of 2004. Since that time, I am have been working at Watauga Medical Center
in Boone, NC as a licensed Physical Therapist.
Hello! My name is Shawn Anderson and I am a graduate of the Biology department
at North Carolina Wesleyan. I graduated in 2001 with a BS in Biology and minored
in Chemistry. I truly enjoyed my time at Wesleyan. The intimacy you get with
being at a small school was one of the things that kept me there. I have made
some wonderful friends there and had the pleasure to take classes under some
great professors. Wesleyan allowed me to spread my wings, which I had been reluctant
to do in the past and helped me grow so much as a person.
I am interested in working with the pediatrics, spinal cord injuries, and aquatic
rehabilitation. I graduated from Duke University's Doctor of Physical Therapy
Program in May 2004 and got engaged Decemeber 2004.

Class of 2000
BS in Biology & Pre-Medical Studies
Minor in Chemistry and Criminal Justice
She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology and Medical Studies; her minor
degrees in criminal justice and chemistry with an emphasis in physics in 2000
from North Carolina Wesleyan College where she represented the college as an
All-American–All-Academic softball player. Upon completion of her undergraduate
degrees, she returned home to Varina, Virginia, and took on a challenging and
rewarding position at L.C. Bird High School in Chesterfield County, Virginia,
where she taught for four years. She earned her Master in Education in
Curriculum and Instruction with her cognate in Instructional Technology from
Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002 subsequently while teaching all walks
of life, coaching various sports, and volunteering for the special Olympics. She
married an extraordinary cop in 2002 and started a professor’s path of teaching
at the university level for the School of Education and the Wilder School of
Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University. In 2004 she
and her husband welcomed a new bundle of joy into the world.
"I contribute my teaching skills and techniques to the late Dr. Debbie
Glover-Fischer. During my senior year at NCWC, I completed an independent study
course that enabled me to co-teach Chemistry with Dr. Deb. I learned a great
value of teaching strategies that semester. I have come to appreciate the
courses and time that each of my professors at NCWC took with me, especially Dr.
Kosal. I realize how important it is to talk to your students not only about the
subject, but life itself. To take the time to listen and try to understand. Not
everyone is perfect and we do not live in a perfect world. Everyone learns
differently and everyone tests differently. I have learned that knowledge cannot
be determined by a test, it is determined through conversation, acceptances, and
time. I learned a great deal of knowledge from my biology and physics courses at
NCWC and with that knowledge I spread it to the youth of our future."
She currently serves as a professor for the Wilder School and the Instructional
Developer and Learning Technologist Specialist for the Master of Arts in
Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness at Virginia Commonwealth
University. She earned her PhD in Education; specifically in homeland security
and public safety in 2007. She is the first Native American Indian from the
Chickahominy tribe to earn the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

I would like to thank my advisor Dr. C Dale Therrien for his advice and
direction while allowing me the freedom to develop into my own person. He built
me up, gave me self-confidence, and convinced me that I could do a lot of
things. I would also like to thank the late Dr. Debra Glover-Fisher for showing
me how a great instructor can influence their students. Through my time at North
Carolina Wesleyan College and onto graduate school I realized that although I
loved the science, what I found most rewarding was helping others and seeing
them learn. I hope I have influenced my students in the same way my mentors at
NCWC influenced me.
