JOB LISTINGS

Biology

The biology major prepares students for entry-level employment in biology-related areas, for state teaching licensure, and for matriculation into graduate and professional schools. The latter includes schools of medicine, dentistry, podiatry, and osteopathy. Writing, critical thinking, and computer literacy are among the skills which each biology major will develop during their studies at Wesleyan. In addition to usual degree requirements, biology majors are encouraged to become actively involved in research by taking independent studies courses from individual faculty members. Such courses help students develop research and problem solving skills, while at the same time teaching them the importance of collaborative studies. Independent studies programs also help students develop the necessary skills to compete in the global workplace. Because biology is a multi-disciplinary science, students take a broad range of course work in ancillary disciplines such as mathematics, chemistry, and physics. For further information about Biology, especially at NC Wesleyan, please see the departmental information and links page.

ECOTEAM INFORMATION

An EcoTeam is a program where college students lead environmental science lessons/activities to local 3rd graders (teachers can apply for a student to come to their class on line).

GLAXOSMITHKLINE

GlaxoSmithKline Women in Science Scholars – two women majoring in science (biology, pre-medicine, chemistry, or environmental science) are selected by the faculty for this scholarship, which provides them with $500 per semester. In addition, it provides a fabulous mentoring program to women science majors of high academic achievement and allows for potential internships with the company

COURSE WORK

All biology majors take a sequence of lower division biology courses, followed by a sequence of 22-24 credits of upper division biology courses. The flexibility built into upper division course requirements permits students to specialize in different subdivisions of biology. For instance, students who are interested in a career in medicine have the opportunity to take upper division courses which are more human-based in concept.
