Exercise Intensity Tool
Heart Rate Reserve Method (HRR)
1. Age years of age
2. Resting Heart Rate beats per minute
o Heart rate (HR) is the number of times that the heart contracts, usually expressed in a 1-minute time frame.
§ In order to measure resting heart rate, lightly press index and middle finger against the radial artery in the groove on the lateral wrist.
· The American College of Sports Medicine recommends an exercise intensity of 40/50% – 85% HRR in order to satisfy the expended caloric need.
o The intensity and the duration of the exercise are inversely related and jointly determine the total caloric expenditure of the exercise session.
