The natural
sciences and mathematics are expanding fields. In the last twenty
years, for example, concern about our environment has created a
demand for ecologists; space exploration has opened new
opportunities for physicists and astronomers; and the advent of the
computer has created an entirely new specialization for
mathematicians. The well-prepared college graduate has no lack of
employment options.
North Carolina Wesleyan College offers the baccalaureate degree in
chemistry. Our program provides rigorous training in the theory and
practice of the chosen discipline and is taught within the framework
of a liberal arts curriculum. There is sufficient flexibility within
the major to allow students to explore the relationships that exist
among the various branches of science and between science and the
humanities. Without such broad training, the significance and
importance of science for society in general cannot be understood.
Most graduate and professional schools are now encouraging a broad
undergraduate study in the natural and social sciences and the
humanities, and are emphasizing the importance of problem solving,
critical thinking, and communication skills. Our curriculum also
provides computer, laboratory, and field experiences, and you will
benefit from the close cooperation among faculty and students.
Opportunities for science graduates are expected to increase
continually over the coming decade as the pool of well-trained
scientists shrinks and as the need for their expertise in
technology, research, politics, and economics expands. North
Carolina Wesleyan's program provides a strong background for a
variety of employment opportunities and for graduate and
professional schools. |
