Introduction
This document provides a source of information for members of the North Carolina
Wesleyan College (NCWC) community regarding the Minimum Requirements a web page
must fulfill in order to be included as a link from the NCWC home page.
NCWC's World Wide Web Goals:
- To provide information in support of research and instruction to faculty, staff and
students of NC Wesleyan College, and to web users worldwide, and
- To facilitate internal communications for NC Wesleyan College faculty, staff and
students.

Web Administrator(s) will maintain a register of all entities publishing on the NCWC
Web Server. The responsibility of preparing web pages lies with the specific college unit
or specific individual (hereinafter referred to as INFORMATION PROVIDERS).
This document assumes that the reader is already familiar with the World Wide Web (WWW)
and is interested in authoring HTML documents. It is NOT intended to be an introduction to
browsing the World Wide Web or the Internet. Any individual(s) publishing web pages are
strongly encouraged to use available resources for training
purposes.
The following "Rights and Responsibilities" are intended to ensure a useful
web environment for users across disciplines, and to support and encourage faculty, staff,
departments, and students in becoming WWW Information Providers.
INFORMATION PROVIDERS' RIGHTS
- Information Providers will receive accounts, computer storage space, pointers to tutorials, books, and other resources for creating web documents.
- Information Providers are free to develop the design, content and presentation of
information contained within their web page, within the constraints of this document and
the NCWC COMPUTER AND NETWORK USE POLICY.
INFORMATION PROVIDERS' RESPONSIBILITIES
- All INFORMATION PROVIDERS will accept responsibility for the creation and ongoing
maintenance of the information contained in their Web pages, whether development is
accomplished through the efforts of one or more individuals.
- All INFORMATION PROVIDERS are responsible for ensuring that the information in
their page(s) is consistent with the goals and policies of North Carolina Wesleyan
College.
- Home pages describing personal interests of individuals should be developed and
maintained in their 'home' directory provided by NCWC for that purpose.
- INFORMATION PROVIDERS should understand that the information put in WWW pages
will be read by many different constituencies and groups. Information that may be
appropriate, and useful for a particular group of users may sometimes result in questions
or unintentional controversy when viewed by users with different perspectives.
PERSONAL HOME PAGES
All NC Wesleyan College personal home pages MUST:
- Include an acknowledgement to North Carolina Wesleyan College, clearly presented on the
page;
- Include a link back to the NC Wesleyan College home page;
- Include the following disclaimer, or equivalent, clearly presented on the page:

- Be dated;
- Include contact information for the person responsible;
- Include a meaningful <title> in the html header.
OFFICIAL COLLEGE PAGES
"Official" North Carolina Wesleyan College World Wide Web pages may be
created by any administrative or academic unit of the College. Units have discretion in
creating and organizing pages provided they:
- Are accurate, current, and appropriate for on-line use.
- Are maintained and updated on the WWW in a timely manner.
- Include the name and contact information for the person who gathers, organizes, formats,
updates, deletes, and manages the pages. (If the position of "Contact Person" is
unfilled for any length of time, the pages may be removed from network access.)
- Comply with guidelines established by this document, the NCWC
Computer and Network Use Policy, and with the established norms of style and function
(banners, links, etc) for the College's web pages.
- undergo a review by the Webmaster prior to publication via the NCWC Home Page.
ACCOUNTABILITY
North Carolina Wesleyan College's WWW Server may not be used in any manner prohibited
by law or disallowed by licenses, contracts, or College regulations. Units or individuals
creating web pages are accountable for the information they "publish" and should
be aware of College policies regarding confidential information, harassment, use of
College computers, and intellectual property. Areas of concern include but are not limited
to:
- Use of copyrighted images, text, or software without permission or in violation of the
copyright laws of the United States.
- Use of pages to provide obscene, offensive, or threatening materials.
- Use of pages for private financial gain or compensation not relevant to the mission of
the College or otherwise in violation of College policy.
- Use of pages to intimidate or single out individuals or groups for degradation or
harassment in violation of federal or state law, and the NC Wesleyan Networking and
Computing Policy.
- Use of pages to provide materials whose nature or volume compromise the ability of the
server to serve other users' documents.
- Use of pages to engage in any illegal activity.
In cases where there is a violation of these guidelines or related regulations or laws,
a page may be removed from network access while the matter is referred to the appropriate
College authority. Violators will be subject to College rules and regulations. Anyone who
is uncertain whether a particular use is proper should consult with members of the
appropriate department:
NC Wesleyan College disclaims all responsibility for servers that may
emerge on campus other than the College's official web servers. No such server may use NC
Wesleyan College's name, logo, or other symbols identified with the College nor purport to
speak for the College or any of its units nor imply any association with or sponsorship by
the College. |
