Campus Networking Standards

Requirements for Network Connection

Each room in our residence halls is equipped with high speed data ports for network and Internet access. In order to effectively access these data ports, the following minimum hardware/software configuration is required:

PC COMPUTERS
  • Pentium 4 class processor (minimum 2.0 GHz) or Pentium M class processor (minimum 1.5 GHz) *exceptions
  • 512 MB memory (minimum) *exceptions
  • 40 G hard disk [60 G (or more) recommended]
  • Microsoft Windows 2000, XP Professional Edition, Media Edition, Vista
(Windows 95/98/ME are no longer recommended. Windows XP Home Edition will connect to the internet but NOT to NC Wesleyan College's network. Thus, you will be able to surf the web, retrieve email, and use internet chat applications. However, you will not have access to NCWC network servers or be able to share files with other computers. Thus, to connect to the NCWC network,  you must upgrade to Windows XP Professional Edition.)

*NOTE: WindowsME has proven a very unstable Operating System on our network. Therefore, we do not support WindowsME. It is highly recommended to upgrade WindowsME to MicrosoftXP Professional. This upgrade is available at the Bookstore.

MACINTOSH COMPUTERS
  • G4 or G5 class processor (minimum 400 MHz)
  • 256 MB memory (minimum)
  • 40 G hard disk [60 G (or more) recommended]
  • Macintosh OS X

*NOTE: Currently, the Macintosh Operating System will not login to our network. Thus, you will be able to surf the web, retrieve email, and use internet chat applications. However, you will not have access to NCWC network servers or be able to share files with other computers. You may login to the network by using VirtualPC software. In addition, because of its renown reliability, it is highly recommended to use Macintosh OS X. These items may be purchased at the Bookstore.

If your desktop computer does not have a 10/100base-T Network Card and you would like to become connected to the campus network, our Technology staff can provide you with additional hardware, cables, and technical assistance to establish your connection. There will be a one-time, nominal charge of $50 for this service. We strive to process connection requests during the first two weeks of each semester.

Laptop users must provide their own PCMCIA Ethernet network card compatible with 10/100base-T and with a RJ-45 jack and cable.

Campus software standards for 2007-2008 are:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000, XP Pro, Vista
  • Microsoft Office 2003* (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Microsoft Office 10 (Macintosh version)
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0+ (for web browsing)

This software is available at the Bookstore.

*NOTE: to use Microsoft Office 2003 and/or Windows XP Professional effectively you will need at least a 1 GHz processor and 512MB of memory.
