Campus Networking Standards
Requirements for Network Connection
Each room in our residence halls is equipped with high speed
data ports for network and Internet access. In order to effectively access these data
ports, the following minimum hardware/software configuration is required:

COMPUTERS |
- Pentium 4 class processor (minimum
2.0 GHz) or Pentium M class processor (minimum
1.5 GHz) *exceptions
- 512 MB memory (minimum) *exceptions
- 40 G hard disk [60 G (or more) recommended]
- Microsoft Windows 2000, XP Professional Edition, Media Edition,
Vista
(Windows 95/98/ME are no longer recommended.
Windows XP Home Edition will connect to the
internet but NOT to
NC Wesleyan College's network. Thus, you will be able to surf
the web, retrieve email, and use internet chat applications. However, you
will not have access to NCWC network servers
or be able to share files with other computers.
Thus, to connect to the NCWC network, you must
upgrade to Windows XP Professional
Edition.)
*NOTE:
WindowsME has proven a very unstable Operating System on our network.
Therefore, we do not support WindowsME. It is
highly recommended to upgrade WindowsME to MicrosoftXP Professional. This
upgrade is available at the Bookstore.

| MACINTOSH
COMPUTERS |
- G4 or G5 class processor (minimum 400 MHz)
- 256 MB memory (minimum)
- 40 G hard disk [60 G (or more) recommended]
- Macintosh OS X
*NOTE:
Currently, the Macintosh Operating System will not login to our
network. Thus, you will be able to surf the web, retrieve email, and use internet
chat applications. However, you will not have
access to NCWC network servers or be able to share files with
other computers. You may login to the network by using VirtualPC
software. In addition, because of its renown reliability, it is
highly recommended to use Macintosh OS X. These items may be
purchased at the Bookstore. |
If your desktop computer does not have a 10/100base-T Network Card and
you would like to become connected to the campus network, our Technology staff
can provide you with additional hardware, cables, and technical assistance to establish
your connection. There will be a one-time, nominal charge of $50 for this service. We
strive to process connection requests during the first two weeks of each semester.
Laptop users must provide their own PCMCIA Ethernet network card
compatible with
10/100base-T and with a RJ-45 jack and cable.
Campus software standards for 2007-2008 are:
- Microsoft Windows 2000, XP Pro, Vista
- Microsoft Office 2003* (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
- Microsoft Office 10 (Macintosh version)
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0+ (for web browsing)
This software is available at the
Bookstore.
*NOTE:
to use Microsoft Office 2003 and/or Windows
XP Professional
effectively you will need at least a 1 GHz processor and
512MB of memory.
