The Management Information Services (MIS) Department, previously known as the Data Processing Department, was renamed based upon its mission: to provide the management of the information resources available on the College database and to provide services to the students, faculty, and staff in their information needs. Though the department is small, with two staff positions, all are committed to insuring that the information and the software for entering and retrieving that information is efficiently managed and secure. As the name implies, the department provides SERVICES to the College community; whether in the form of customized programs or menus, assistance in software use, coordinating with various offices as to sharing a common database, and resolving software problems. The MIS department also insures that the College departments have appropriate access, equipment, and responsiveness to their information needs. This ranges from maintaining a consumables inventory (paper, ribbons, laser toner) to network connections to terminal and computer interface to data retrieval and correspondence control training. A large portion of the department's responsibilities is in maintaining the administrative computing equipment. The administrative database was moved in late 1999 to a HP D 9000 running HP-UX (Unix) operating system. Previous hardware included a DECstation 5000 and an IBM 36 system. The system supports up to 64 simultaneous users running a third party administrative software for information management specifically designed for all aspects of higher education administration. The MIS staff is proud of its reputation on campus for its knowledge, efficiency, and responsiveness to the needs of the community.
