Set Up Office 2007 to Save in a Compatible Format by Default

Follow these instructions to set up Microsoft Office 2007 to save in the 97-2003 format by default. This ensures all documents you create with Office 2007 will be compatible with previous versions of Microsoft Office.

  1. Open one of the Office 2007 applications, such as Word 2007, Excel 2007, or PowerPoint 2007.

  2. Click the Office button. Button image

    Do one of the following:

    1.      In Word, click Word Options.

    2.      In Excel, click Excel Options.

    3.      In PowerPoint, click PowerPoint Options.

    3.      Click Save on the left side of the window.

    4.      Locate the option labeled, "Save files in this format:" and do one of the following:

    1.      In Word, select Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc).

    2.      In Excel, select Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls).

    3.      In PowerPoint, select PowerPoint Presentation 97-2003 (*.ppt).

    5.      Click OK.

Note: You should complete these instructions for all Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) to ensure they all use the 97-2003 compatible format.
