Rocky
Mount, N.C.—A Tarboro woman earned not
only her bachelor of arts degree in English
but also North Carolina Wesleyan College’s
top achievement award during the College’s
graduation ceremonies on May 5.
Shannon McGinnis received the President’s
Cup, which Wesleyan presents annually to a
graduating senior who best exhibits
characteristics considered most desirable in
a graduating student. Criteria for the award
include a high standard of academic
performance and embodiment of the ideals and
aims of the College.
In presenting the award to McGinnis,
Wesleyan president Dr. Ian Newbould said,
“First and foremost, Ms. McGinnis is an
excellent student. She delights her
teachers, and she sets high standards for
herself and helps her fellow students raise
their standards. Her passion for learning
makes her a welcome addition to any class.
She represents the best hopes for and of a
civilized, educated society.”
Newbould described McGinnis as a student who
is not afraid of hard work, who is joyful,
respectful, thoughtful, grateful, kind,
patient, generous, strong, and a leader.
“In her four years here, she has grown from
a home schooled teenager to a young woman
with unlimited potential,” Newbould said.
“She leaves an impressive legacy for all
North Carolina Wesleyan College students.”
