Rocky Mount, N.C.—Dr. Ed Shearin has been named Director of the Adult Degree Program and Assistant Professor of Education at North Carolina Wesleyan College’s Triangle location in Morrisville, effective October 16.

Shearin earned his B.A. in history and K-12 licensure from Wesleyan in 1969, then remained in the Rocky Mount area to teach history and coach football at Nashville School. Later he moved to the New Bern (NC) City Schools, accumulating a total of 11 years K12 and community college teaching.

While teaching high school, he earned his master’s in library science at East Carolina University. That completed, he held three successive community college appointments: Reference Librarian at Central Piedmont (Charlotte), Dean of Library/Learning Resources at Carteret (Morehead City), and Dean of Instruction at Pamlico (Grantsboro).

In 1990, Shearin began his Ed.D. at N.C. State University while working as both a graduate student and library dean at Carteret Community College. In 1995 he completed his Ed.D. and became Dean of Instruction at Pamlico Community College.  In 2000, Shearin moved to Mars Hill College, where he held a faculty appointment as assistant professor and taught in the educational technology field.  He became founding director of the Adventure of the American Mind Program, a Library of Congress Partnership with Mars Hill College. The program trains educators in the use of Library of Congress digital resources for enhancing classroom instruction. Shearin is active in Rotary International, where he is a Paul Harris Fellow and past member of the Rotary clubs of Asheville and Morehead City.  He has worked as a member of various economic development councils in western and eastern North Carolina.

Shearin and his wife, Marie, a retired teacher, have one grown son, Matthew, who is an engineer in Connecticut.
