President Newbould's Statement on the UNC System Study In recent months, the growing strength of North Carolina Wesleyan College has prompted a discussion among civic, business, and education leaders as to how the College might serve the needs of Eastern North Carolina in greater measure. One possibility being discussed is the potential relationship of Wesleyan to the University of North Carolina system. On a number of occasions during the past three decades, there has been discussion about NC Wesleyan being made a part of the UNC System, most recently during the 1990s. During the past six months, there has been a concerted effort by civic leaders in Rocky Mount and Nash and Edgecombe counties to have the matter looked at again. At their request, a study was proposed. The Board of Trustees has consented to and endorsed such a study. Initial discussions have taken place with the UNC System, including Erskine Bowles, the new president. Today, a bill was introduced in the state legislature authorizing UNC to initiate a study of the educational needs of Eastern North Carolina, taking into account the educational and economic needs of the region, the changing demographics of the state, and the extent to which Wesleyan might serve those needs. The study will take place over the coming months. It is too early to determine what recommendations might emerge from that study. These recommendations could include everything from Wesleyan remaining as it is and recognizing its strengths for significant expansion for the future, to accepting an invitation to become part of the UNC System. Whatever comes from the study, the College, of course, will determine its own future. Ian D.C. Newbould, President
