Raleigh News and Observer Press Photographers Exhibit

Opens October 7 at North Carolina Wesleyan College’s Mims Gallery

Rocky Mount, N.C.—How often do we get the opportunity to see the photographs of 25 active and seasoned professionals all in one place? Wesleyan’s Mims Gallery is pleased to host a photo exhibition of Raleigh’s News and Observer press photographers spanning careers from 1980 to the present. The exhibition reception for this talented crew opens at 7 p.m. Friday, October 7, with live music and refreshments and is open to the public at no charge.

More than just covering a news beat, these press photographers are gifted pictorial strategists and artists who can tell stories in just one image. They can express the joy, tension, misery, and emotion of a topical event by temporarily embedding themselves in it to learn its pictorial essence. They will put themselves in harm’s way to capture human drama. They know whether a situation is funny or tragic and what is the appropriate way to record those fleeting moments with their cameras. This exhibition shows many exceptional examples of the breadth of the photojournalists’ world and their commitment to photography as art.

The News & Observer Vision Statement expresses this best of all when it says that "photojournalists are integral collaborators in the news gathering process. We are committed to producing and publishing photographic reportage that is accurate, balanced, compelling, innovative and meaningful. All of this holds true in our journalistic pursuits, and for every image we capture. The results are reflected in the diversity of the communities and subject matter we cover. Our curiosity enables us to find and share visual stories with the world."

Opening concurrently in the Dunn Center’s Civic Gallery is the photo chronicle of Wesleyan College [1956-1996] by Rocky Mount’s premiere photojournalist, Charlie Killebrew, who has dedicated over fifty years to recording the significant moments in Rocky Mount’s history.

We welcome Raleigh’s News and Observer Photojournalists and Rocky Mount’s Charlie Killebrew, and like all Mims Gallery receptions, this is a free stop Friday evening to see some very significant art and to enjoy community fellowship. This exhibition will be of special interest to all those photo enthusiasts who love to talk photography and share a few secrets of great photography. School groups and tours are always welcome free of charge. To schedule a tour, phone 252-985-5268.
