March 14, 2005 North Carolina Wesleyan College Creates Scholarship In Memory of Soldier Killed In Iraq Rocky Mount, N.C.North Carolina Wesleyan College has established a scholarship in memory of Christopher Cash, an outstanding 1993 graduate who was killed in June 2004 in Iraq when insurgents attacked his Bradley Armored Vehicle with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. Cash, age 36 when he died, was a captain in the North Carolina National Guard. He served with the 30th Heavy Separate Brigade, which deployed to Iraq in February 2004. He was commander of Alpha Company of the 1st Battalion, 120th Infantry, based in Jacksonville, N.C. Before joining the National Guard, Cash served with the U.S. Armys 82nd Airborne Division for four years. As a Wesleyan student, Cash earned his bachelors degree in physical education and graduated cum laude. During his senior year he was honored as the first recipient of the Don Scalf Scholarship honoring Wesleyans retired athletics director and coach. He earned a masters degree at East Carolina University in 2002. Cash was posthumously awarded a Bonze Star for meritorious service and a Purple Heart for being a combat infantryman injured in battle. Survivors include his wife and two young teenaged sons. Contributions to the Christopher Cash Memorial Scholarship may be sent to the Office of Development, North Carolina Wesleyan College, 3400 N.
