Two North Carolina Wesleyan College Alumni

Join Wesleyan’s Board of Trustees

Rocky Mount, N.C.—Two graduates of North Carolina Wesleyan College have been named to the College’s board of trustees. Paul L. Leeland, a 1971 psychology graduate, and Elbert H. Wampler, Jr., a 1975 history graduate, were named to the board at its February 3 meeting.

Wesleyan’s President Ian Newbould said the College is especially pleased that the new members of the board are Wesleyan graduates. "The insights that Paul Leeland and Elbert Wampler will bring to the board from their different careers will be very valuable," Newbould said. "In addition, the fact that they are Wesleyan graduates who have experienced the campus firsthand as students will enhance their judgment on many matters that may come before the board. It is gratifying that these Wesleyan alumni have taken a great interest in helping to lead their alma mater forward."

Leeland is assistant to the bishop and director of ministerial relations for the Raleigh area within the southeastern jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church. He was formerly district superintendent of the Goldsboro district. His career has included service as chaplain at Duke Medical Center and Elon College and as a pastor in Raleigh, Kinston, and Sanford. He is an ordained elder of the church’s North Carolina Annual Conference and has served as a delegate to the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference and the General Conference. He has also been a member of the Conference Board of Pensions, the Council on Finance and Administration, and the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry Board.

Leeland earned his master of theology and master of divinity degrees at Duke University and his doctorate in education at N.C. State University. He and his wife, Janet Dowell Leeland, have two daughters, a son, and two grandchildren.

Elbert Wampler, Jr., began his career as a teacher with the Henry County schools in Martinsville, Virginia. Currently, and for nearly 30 years, he has been senior sales representative with Pulaski Furniture Corporation, covering Florida. He serves on Pulaski’s advisory board for new product development, has traveled worldwide in that capacity, and has received numerous sales achievement awards. He teaches sales and customer relations seminars for several major furniture companies.

At Wesleyan, Wampler played basketball for four years, was tri-captain of the team in 1973, and played golf as a member of the championship teams of 1971-72 and 1972-73. He traveled with Wesleyan history and geography professor Dr. Allen Johnson and others to England, Middle Europe, Russia, and Scandinavian countries.

Wampler remains an avid golfer, has served on the board of directors of the Country Club of Coral Springs, and has directed various golf tournaments. He and his wife, Karen Elizabeth Jessop Wampler, have two sons and live in Coral Springs, Florida.
