Black History Month At North Carolina Wesleyan College

To Feature Guest Speakers Including Mayor Fred Turnage,

An NAACP Leader, Wesleyan’s First Black Student, And More

Rocky Mount, N.C.—Black History Month during February at North Carolina Wesleyan College will feature several prominent speakers at two different events that are free and open to the public.

Dr. Robert Satcher, former president of Fisk University and Saint Paul’s College, and also a noted chemist, will speak on Thursday, February 24, at 7 p.m. in Powers Recital Hall in the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts.

During the 1960s, Satcher played a major role in planning student and NAACP actions. He is the brother of the former surgeon general of the United States, Dr. David Satcher, and the father of Dr. Robert L. Satcher, a NASA astronaut and member of the medical staff at Northwestern University.

Wesleyan’s Black History Month activities will also include a panel discussion on the civil rights movement to be held Tuesday, February 8, at 7 p.m. in the Carlton Board Room at the Dunn Center. The panelists will include Rocky Mount Mayor Fred Turnage; Helen Gay, the first black woman elected to the City Council; the Rev. Elbert Lee, a former NAACP top leader and first black student to attend Wesleyan; and Al LaRose, former library director at Wesleyan.

Both events are sponsored by the College’s chapter of Phi Beta Sigma, one of the nation’s five historically black Greek-lettered fraternities, which is dedicated to upholding brotherhood, scholarship, and service.
