History Professor To Lecture On South Africa Today On February 28

Dr. Richard L. Watson III, professor of history at North Carolina Wesleyan College, will speak on "Beyond the Miracle: A Glimpse of South Africa Today" on Monday, February 28, at 11:30 a.m. in Leon Russell Chapel at Wesleyan. The lecture is part of the College's Fourth Monday Colloquium series and is free and open to the public.

Dr. Watson is an authority on 19th century South African history and has written articles on the subject and a book, The Slave Question: Liberty and Property in South Africa, published in 1990. Currently he is studying the changes South African society underwent when slavery was abolished, and is interested in comparing that experience to the same period in the United States after the Civil War.

Watson has twice received Wesleyan’s Jefferson Pilot Professor award, the highest honor that the College bestows upon a member of its faculty.
