Justice Studies Professor Mark Stevens Is Guest On Radio Talk Show

North Carolina Wesleyan College Justice Studies Professor Mark Stevens was the featured guest on talk radio 1120 KMOX out of St. Louis, Missouri, on January 17, 2005. Stevens was contacted as a military law expert and as a result of several interviews he had done for CNN and other Associated Press news agencies.

His topic was Conscientious Objectors in the Military. Specifically the discussion concerned Sgt. Kevin Benderman, who had done a tour in Iraq with his unit and who now is refusing to return. Benderman’s claim is that he became a Conscientious Objector due to his experience in his first tour in Iraq.

Stevens answered questions from the talk show host for about 10 minutes concerning the various regulations and procedures to obtain Conscientious Objector status. He also discussed the various forms of discipline that Sgt. Benderman could face for refusing to deploy with his unit.

Stevens often is asked to comment on subjects related to military justice. He was a guest several months ago on MSNBC’s "Abrams Report." As a former military judge, he was invited to take part in the TV program to comment on aspects of the Iraqi prison abuse scandal.
