January 19, 2005 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation Awards Financial Aid Grants To North Carolina Wesleyan College Rocky Mount, N.C.The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation recently awarded North Carolina Wesleyan College a grant of $23,500 to be used for financial aid during the 2004-2005 academic year. Students with financial need who have demonstrated a commitment to service above self and to community service are eligible. Additionally, the foundation has awarded Wesleyan a grant of $6,500 for the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Endowment at the College, which was established in 1998 to provide ongoing support for Sullivan Scholars at Wesleyan. The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation, located in Oxford, Mississippi, was chartered in New York State in 1934. Its purpose is to promote service to others and the community. Those values were exemplified by Algernon and Mary Mildred Sullivan, the parents of the organizations founder. In addition to providing financial aid support to small private colleges primarily in the Appalachian region, the Sullivan Foundation collaborates with 53 southeastern colleges and universities in presenting awards in memory of Algernon and Mary Mildred Sullivan. At Wesleyan, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award each year honors a graduating senior who exemplifies the qualities exhibited by the life of Algernon Sydney Sullivan. He was a lawyer, scholar, and orator who was prominent in New York City social and civic activities from 1857 until his death in 1888. The award is presented to the student who best demonstrates academic achievement and excellence in character, leadership, service to the community, and a commitment to spiritual values. The 2004 award was presented to Lori Mahone Henderson during May Commencement. She is a business administration major from Williamsburg, Virginia, who graduated cum laude. In addition, a Sullivan award is presented each year to a non-student member of the College community during Founders Day. The most recent recipient is Vel H. Johnson. She is a Wesleyan trustee whose career has included service as a regional representative for the Easter Seal Foundation, a social worker, and executive director of the Nash-Rocky Mount Mental Health Association. Currently she is a partner in Johnson and Pittman, an event planning company. She has volunteered with many area organizations and serves on the local Historic Preservation Commission and is director of Preservation Rocky Mount, Inc. ### |
