January 12, 2005 Gateway Technology Center Under Construction The new Gateway Technology Center near Wesleyans main entrance is now under construction. The Center is scheduled to be completed by early 2006. State and local officials broke ground December 29. The educational facility will serve multiple purposes, both for the College and the community. Construction is supported by the Economic Development Authority of the Federal Government, as well as the City of Rocky Mount, Nash County, and the Carolinas Gateway Partnership. The Partnership, a coalition of over 200 public and private sector investors from the City of Rocky Mount and Nash and Edgecombe counties, serves as the economic development arm for the Twin-County region. Wesleyan President Ian Newbould said, "The Technology Center will be a great asset to Wesleyan College and Eastern North Carolina. The facility will increase awareness of Wesleyan and its programs, and will benefit the College and the needs of our growing student population. "This will be North Carolina Wesleyans building. It will provide much-needed additional classroom space for our students and faculty. As Wesleyan serves more students, the Technology Center will house offices for additional faculty and provide more adequate space for our current faculty and staff. The new facility will include high-tech computer laboratories and state-of-the-art distance learning facilities to serve the programs envisioned by N.C. State and East Carolina University, who will provide courses in business, engineering, and related subjects for local industry employees and other students. "The Gateway Technology Center is the culmination of a close partnership among North Carolina Wesleyan, Nash Community College, the City of Rocky Mount, and Nash County," Newbould said. "With support from the Gateway Partnership, the Gold LEAF Foundation, and Governor Mike Easley and the State of North Carolina, the Center is a prime example of people working together to meet the educational needs of our region."
