December 09, 2004 Wesleyan Receives $75,000 Challenge Grant The Titmus Foundation of Petersburg, Virginia, recently awarded Wesleyan a challenge grant to increase endowed scholarship support. The foundation will award $15,000 over each of the next five fiscal years, totaling $75,000, when Wesleyan raises $15,000 each year in matching gifts toward endowed scholarship support. Gifts may be from any sourcealumni, friends, businesses, and foundations. The Titmus Foundation is a family foundation established in 1945. It provides endowment and scholarship funds for colleges and independent schools located primarily in Virginia and North Carolina. Significantly enlarging the endowment, especially for support of student scholarships, is among Wesleyans top priorities. The endowment today is $5.8 million, which is low compared with that of similar institutions. Earnings from scholarship endowments provide annual scholarship funds, which are vital to Wesleyan, since more than 90 percent of students receive some form of financial assistance. The minimum amount needed to establish a named scholarship is $10,000, although donations of any amount can count toward the Titmus challenge grant.
