22nd Annual "Day for Wesleyan" Set for September 16

Rocky Mount, N.C.—The 22nd Annual Day for Wesleyan fundraiser for North Carolina Wesleyan College will take place on Tuesday, September 16. On that day, more than 100 volunteers will visit nearly 1,200 local businesses and individuals to ask for donations and pledges to help support ongoing basic expenses of the college, including scholarships, library resources, teaching materials, computer equipment, and other basic needs.

This year’s community-wide volunteer efforts are being led by Paul Bauer and Joseph Nelson, two Rocky Mount businessmen and community leaders. Bauer is a 1986 Wesleyan graduate and vice-president of the John Hackney Agency of Rocky Mount. Nelson is chairman and president of Davenport Motor Company.

English professor Dr. Vivienne Anderson is in charge of on-campus solicitation. In a letter to faculty and staff, Anderson said, "Our participation serves as an example for all others who may be considering contributions to the College. Indeed, our commitment to the College’s continued progress and growth exemplifies our commitment to our students, our alumni and the larger Rocky Mount community."

The day’s events will begin with a breakfast for volunteers at Wesleyan’s Dunn Center for the Performing Arts. From there, volunteers will go into the community to make their calls, then will gather for lunch at the college. The day’s activities will conclude with a celebration and reception at the Wesleyan College president’s home on the campus at 5:30 p.m. Members of the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce, alumni, and friends of the college will be on hand when the tally for the day is revealed.

Last year’s Day for Wesleyan raised a new record amount of just over $405,000.

Official planning activities for the event got underway August 19, when about 40 volunteer members of the Day for Wesleyan executive committee met at the college.

Street banners announcing the event stretch across Hammond Street between South Pearl and Franklin, Western Avenue between South Pearl and South Grace, and Hill Street between George Street and Cokey Road.
