North Carolina Wesleyan College To Celebrate 47th Year

At Founders' Day On October 23

Rocky Mount, N.C.—North Carolina Wesleyan College will celebrate 47 years since its establishment, in 1956, at a Founders' Day ceremony on October 23. The public is invited to attend the annual event, to be held at 11 a.m. in Minges Auditorium of the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts.

Keynote speaker will be Wesleyan professor emeritus of history and geography Dr. Allen S. Johnson. His career at the college spans almost forty years—nearly the entirety of Wesleyan's existence. From 1964, when Wesleyan's first class graduated, to 1997, he taught in the areas of British, Russian, Middle Eastern, and Far Eastern history, American Colonial history, and world regional geography. After his retirement from full-time teaching in 1997, Johnson continued his career at Wesleyan as a part-time faculty member. He is currently teaching two courses.

Johnson earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Wake Forest University and his Ph.D. in history from Duke University. His many articles and reviews have been published in professional journals and other publications. His works include Tar Heel Maps: Colony and State, 1590-1995, "The Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution," and entries in the Book of Days encyclopedia. His honors include a Fulbright Fellowship to India in 1984, a Malone Fellowship to Egypt in 1992, and a listing in Who's Who in the World.

Locally, Johnson is a member of Rocky Mount's First United Methodist Church and is a past president of the Kiwanis Club.

Also during the Founders' Day event, Wesleyan will award its highest honor for a member of the community, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award, which will be presented to an outstanding area leader.

The Exemplary Teacher Award and the Distinguished Staff Award will be presented also, along with service awards and other recognitions.
