December 11, 2002 North Carolina Wesleyan College Reaffirmed for Ten Years Rocky Mount, N.C.Just in time for the holidays, North Carolina Wesleyan College received great news. The college has been reaffirmed for another 10 years by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the regional accreditation body that serves 11 Southeastern states. The accreditation organization, which completed an extensive review of the college in September, confirmed at its annual meeting Monday that Wesleyan has been granted full accreditation. "This is an important day for the college," said Thomas A. Betts, Jr., chairman of Wesleyans board of trustees. "The accreditation process is a difficult one, because the standards of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools are high and the road to achieving them is difficult. I appreciate very much the hard work and the dedication that the faculty and staff under the leadership of Dr. Newbould gave to this project. This is another example that Wesleyan is always up to the task and that we are truly a quality institution providing a good education." Following an initial visit to Wesleyan by SACS in February 2000, the college received a warning status and was given two years to meet 85 conditions concerning the library, the qualifications of faculty in the off-site campus program, strategic planning, the number of full-time faculty, and board governance issues. Following the resignation of Dr. John White as Wesleyans president at the end of the spring 2000 semester, work began under interim president Dr. Charles Glassick and has continued since the arrival of Newbould in the summer of 2001. The accreditation decision followed two years of work, Newbould said. "This reaffirmation has come after a prodigious effort by our board members, our faculty, and our staff. We have emerged from this process a much changed and a much better college. The news from SACS marks an important milestone in our history and puts us on a path to what I believe will be an unprecedented and successful future. This is a wonderful Christmas present for us all." ### |
