"Day for Wesleyan" Faculty, Staff Campaign Underway

Rocky Mount, N.C.—The faculty and staff component of North Carolina Wesleyan College’s 21st Annual Day for Wesleyan got underway Monday. Pledge cards were distributed campus-wide by this year’s campaign faculty chair, Biology Professor Erica Kosal, and staff chair, Doretha Chichester, information specialist.

"We are happy to serve as this year’s co-chairpersons for the annual ‘Day for Wesleyan’ campaign, scheduled for September 24th," the co-chairs said in a letter to Wesleyan’s faculty and staff. "This fundraiser helps to provide support to our students by way of scholarships and other academic programs including tutoring and study workshops…. We hope you will consider a gift to this year’s annual campaign."

As an incentive for faculty and staff contributions and pledges, three drawings will be held for sets of tickets to "A Wonderful Life," this year’s holiday show to be held in Minges Auditorium at Wesleyan’s Dunn Center for the Performing Arts.

Besides the annual faculty and staff campaign, this year’s "Day for Wesleyan" will include a new alumni component chaired by Roger Taylor, a 1970 Wesleyan graduate who heads AXA Advisors—Roger G. Taylor and Associates. Taylor and an executive committee of more than 20 local Wesleyan graduates have volunteered to contact a group of local alumni in an effort to make this year’s campaign a successful alumni event.

The City of Rocky Mount put up three street banners announcing "Day for Wesleyan" last Friday. These are at Hammond Street between South Pearl and Franklin, Western Avenue between South Pearl and South Grace, and Hill Street between George Street and Cokey Road.

Preliminary activities surrounding Wesleyan’s annual fundraiser got underway August 13, when more than 50 members of the event’s executive committee met at the college, led by this year’s co-chairs, Charles T. Lane, a Rocky Mount attorney, and his wife, Annie Gray Calhoun Lane. On the actual "Day for Wesleyan," the Lanes will head more than 100 volunteers who will visit some 1,200 local businesses and individuals in Rocky Mount and in Nash and Edgecombe counties to ask for their support for Wesleyan. Proceeds from the day will go to the College’s Annual Fund, which supports ongoing basic operating expenses, including scholarships, library resources, teaching materials, computers, and other basic needs.

"Day for Wesleyan" will conclude September 24 with a celebration and reception at the Wesleyan College President’s Home on the college campus at 5:30 p.m. Members of the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce, alumni, and friends of the college will be on hand when the tally for the day is revealed.
