State Finals Math Contest Winners Announced

Rocky Mount, N.C.— Students Michael Lin and James Zhou of Myrtle Grove Middle School in Wilmington were among those receiving top awards recently received in the State Finals Mathematics Contest in the Algebra I competition. Katie Carbone was their teacher.

Zhou placed second in the state and first in the Eastern Regional competition. Lin placed third in the state and second in Eastern Regional competition.

In the Algebra II competition, Darryl DeWitt of Wilmington’s Hoggard High School placed third in the Eastern Regional contest.

In the Geometry competition, Ying Liu (left) came in tenth in the state, while Sunny Xi placed third. Both students attend Hoggard High School.

For the convenience of contest participants, tests for the statewide competition were given on May 2 in various locations. About 125 students from Eastern North Carolina took tests in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II at North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount. At the same time, students from other parts of the state took the same tests at UNC-Greensboro and UNC-Asheville. Test results were combined to identify the top five performers statewide.

Students invited to the state finals had already competed in regional competitions and had performed in the top 10 percent of all competitors.
