North Carolina Wesleyan College Inaugurates New President

Dr. Ian David Campbell NewbouldRocky Mount, N.C.—Dr. Ian David Campbell Newbould was inaugurated as North Carolina Wesleyan College’s fifth president today in a ceremony at 2:30 p.m. in Minges Auditorium of the College’s Dunn Center for the Performing Arts.

Newbould succeeded interim president Dr. Charles Glassick, who provided strong leadership during the search to replace Dr. John B. White, who resigned after a five-year tenure.

In his inaugural address before a crowd from the College community and the greater Rocky Mount area, Newbould said that Wesleyan’s purpose is the fulfillment of each individual student. "My vision for North Carolina Wesleyan sees...professors who enable students to develop their skills and talents..., students who develop critical thinking, foreign language and communication skills..., who develop a set of ethical principles..., students with global perspectives."

Newbould said that Wesleyan "has meant a great deal to many people, and as we go forward, we will ensure that the building blocks for growth and development are firmly in place...."

His administrative experience includes positions at the University of Lethbridge, including academic vice president, dean of the faculty of arts and science, and director of research administration.

Newbould’s teaching experience has included courses in English, Dutch, and European history. In addition to teaching at Canadian universities, he has taught history in England, Holland, and Japan. In 1990, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society of Great Britain.
