Newbould Is President of NC Wesleyan College

Dr. Ian Newbould

ROCKY MOUNT, NC-Robert R. Mauldin, chairman of the Board of Trustees at North Carolina Wesleyan College, today announced the appointment of Dr. Ian David Campbell Newbould as president of the Rocky Mount-based independent, four-year college. "We are very excited that Dr. Newbould has accepted the presidency," said Mauldin. "He comes to Rocky Mount from Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada where, since 1991, he has been president of a liberal arts institution that was ranked as Canada's top primarily undergraduate university for nine consecutive years." Dr. Newbould replaces interim president, Dr. Charles Glassick, who provided the College with strong leadership during the yearlong search to replace Dr. John B. White who resigned after a five-year tenure at the College.

Newbould attended a news conference today immediately following the winter meeting of the Board of Trustees where the trustees unanimously had approved his selection as the fifth president of North Carolina Wesleyan College. Newbould told the College community, "Both my wife Carla and I are looking forward to coming to Rocky Mount and joining the team at North Carolina Wesleyan College. My experience as president of an institution similar to yours will be useful, I trust, in helping to address the challenges that face NCWC. I'm confident that we can turn those challenges into real opportunities."

Newbould, 57, is in his tenth year as President of Mount Allison University, a school of approximately 2300 students, originally founded in 1839 as a Methodist College. Currently, he is also the Chair of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. While at Mount Allison, he helped take the endowment from $25 million to approximately $80 million. He oversaw the effort for faculty led curricular revisions that strengthened the liberal arts College and initiated a comprehensive strategic planning process that built upon the success of those changes.

Newbould has extensive career experience as a History professor and as an administrator in Canada and abroad, having been both a Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Academic Vice-President at the University of Lethbridge. He also was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society of Great Britain.

When Newbould recently visited the Wesleyan campus, he met with representatives of the faculty, staff, administration, students, alumni, trustees, and Board of Visitors, as well as with several community leaders. Vel Johnson, Chair of the Presidential Search Committee and Trustee of the College said that his interaction with every constituency was very positive. According to Johnson, "The Presidential Search Committee enthusiastically and unanimously recommended to the Board of Trustees to appoint Dr. Newbould as the fifth president of North Carolina Wesleyan College."

Newbould holds dual citizenship in Canada and Britain; his wife, Carla, holds dual citizenship in Canada and Holland. Both are committed to educational programs that broaden international and multicultural experiences for students. Dr. Newbould stated, "Education that is based in the liberal arts and coupled with sound professional training continues to be the most effective way of cultivating leadership for a world that is becoming more and more interdependent."

Newbould received his bachelor's degree from the University of Western Ontario; his Master of Arts from the University of Guelph; and his PhD. from the University of Manchester.

Newbould has received numerous honors and awards throughout his career, including a visiting fellowship at Oxford and numerous research grants. He has been an active member of a number of professional and civic organizations and has served on a variety of boards, commissions, and task forces throughout his career. He has published a book entitled Whiggery and Reform 1830-1841: The Politics of Government, written numerous articles on topics in British, Canadian and European history, and delivered many papers at conferences throughout the world. Chairman of the Board, Bob Mauldin said, "Dr. Newbould is a respected scholar as well as a proven leader and administrator."

Newbould is married to the former Carla Vandergrift. They have three grown children. Both of the Newbould's expressed their enthusiasm for becoming a part of the Rocky Mount community. Newbould said, "Carla and I want a very close relationship with the people of eastern North Carolina; we intend to be actively involved not only in the life of the College, but also in that of the surrounding community."
