December 19, 2001 Barton College Art Professor to Exhibit New Work at N. C. Wesleyan College Rocky Mount, N.C.An exhibition of new ceramic sculpture and wheel-thrown vessels by Barton College art professor Mark Gordon will be on display in the Mims Gallery of North Carolina Wesleyan Colleges Dunn Center for the Performing Arts, beginning Friday, January 11. The public is invited to a free reception and an opportunity to meet the artist at 7 p.m., when the exhibit opens. Gordon has developed a unique process of copper wire-wrapped Raku pottery. Many of the new ceramic artworks in his exhibit will feature the curious surface patterns created by this process. The artist works with traditional and sculptural forms that exploit the dynamics of clay and explore the range of kiln-fired colors. The artist has exhibited and lectured internationally in countries including Greece, Spain, Israel, Syria, and Venezuela. He is included in 60 public collections worldwide. He has won many prestigious awards, including a Fulbright Teaching Award in 1991, and he has twice received a Pollock-Krasner Grant, a highly-coveted artists award. Recently he was competitively selected to exhibit in the 25th Anniversary Ragdale Foundation Exhibition in Chicago. He has served on the N.C. State Department of Public Instruction Panel to Revise Art Education. Gordon earned his bachelor of arts in philosophy from Oberlin College in 1974 and his master of fine arts from Ohio State University in 1988. He has been a professor of fine arts at Barton College since 1999. The Mims Gallery, which is free and open to the public, is located in N.C. Wesleyan Colleges Dunn Center for the Performing Arts. It is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours are available for schools and community groups. For additional information, contact Everett M. Adelman, gallery director, at (252) 985-5268.
