November 5, 2001 Hollister Native Shows Crafts in N.C. Wesleyan Exhibit Rocky Mount, N.C.North Carolina Wesleyan College freshman Sheena Mills, of the Hollister area, is among the artists whose works are included in an exhibit, "Pathmakers: North Carolina Native American Women of Distinction." The exhibit, which opened at Wesleyans Four Sisters Gallery on October 25, will run through February 24 and is free and open to the public. The display includes arts and crafts from the women of the Haliwa-Saponi community in Warren, Northampton, and Halifax counties, as well as photographic portraits by Mark Wagoner, which are curated by Barbara Braveboy-Locklear. Mills, a chemistry major at Wesleyan, has several items in the exhibit, including basketry, beadwork, and stone carving. "I got interested in crafts when I was about 12, because my sister was interested in it," she said. "Sharon Harris from the Hollister area taught me and others, or she would arrange for it to be taught." At age 15, Mills sold her first stone carving to Pembroke Universitys museum but says she sometimes wishes she had kept it, since it was her first carving. "I like stone carving, because no two pieces are ever the same," Mills explained, "and the art depends on the rock and what you see in it." Mills is the daughter of Teresa Mills and Donald Mills, of the Hollister area. The hand-made crafts on display at Wesleyan are curated by nationally known ceramic artist Senora Lynch. They include richly detailed ceramics, basketry, beadwork, and quilts. All reflect native American traditions and modern departures. The Four Sisters Gallery is located in Wesleyans Thomas J. Pearsall, Jr. Building. Hours are 9 to 5, Monday through Friday, and 9 to noon Saturday. N.C. Wesleyan is an independent, four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The College offers bachelors degrees in 22 majors on the main campus in Rocky Mount. It also offers an Adult Degree Program specially designed to help working adults finish their bachelors degrees in several disciplines on the Rocky Mount campus and at sites in Raleigh, Durham, and Goldsboro. # # # |
