McCarter Encourages African-American Churches

to Support "Day for Wesleyan"

Rocky Mount, N.C.—Thanks to the efforts and enthusiasm of The Reverend Dr. R. T. McCarter, senior pastor of The New Morning Star Church of Christ in Rocky Mount, many members of that church plan to support North Carolina Wesleyan College’s upcoming fundraiser, Day for Wesleyan.

McCarter met recently with Wesleyan’s new president, Dr. Ian Newbould, to discuss how leaders of the African-American church community could support Wesleyan students and the College. Following the meeting, McCarter presented Wesleyan with a check for $1,000, the first installment of a $3,000 pledge from The New Morning Star Church. The gift will be included in contributions to this year’s 20th Annual Day for Wesleyan, to be held on Tuesday, September 18. On that day, about 100 volunteers will go out into the business community to request support for basic operating expenses, including scholarships for deserving students.

In pledging support for Wesleyan, McCarter expressed his pleasure at the College’s percentage of African-American and minority students. Total enrollment on the Rocky Mount campus this fall is about 800, of which approximately 40 percent are African American.

N.C. Wesleyan is an independent, four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The College offers bachelor’s degrees in 22 majors on the main campus in Rocky Mount. It also offers an Adult Degree Program geared to help working adults finish their bachelor’s degrees in several disciplines on the Rocky Mount campus and at sites in Raleigh, Durham, and Goldsboro.
