Newest Food Lion Gives Scholarship

To N.C. Wesleyan College

Rocky Mount, N.C.—Rocky Mount’s newest Food Lion store presented North Carolina Wesleyan College with a $1,000 scholarship during the store’s grand opening festivities on August 8. The scholarship will be counted in this year’s Day for Wesleyan campaign as part of the annual effort to raise funds in support of the general operations of the College, which includes scholarships to deserving students.

Mike Atkins, manager of the new store, presented Food Lion’s check to Wesleyan’s president, Dr. Ian Newbould, and Linda Stallone, vice president of development, as store employees and a crowd of shoppers looked on. The scholarship presentation followed the official ribbon-cutting ceremony conducted by Rocky Mount Mayor Fred Turnage.

"This scholarship marks the beginning of a fine relationship between Food Lion and North Carolina Wesleyan College that will surely be mutually beneficial," said Newbould. "The College looks forward to having Food Lion as its newest near neighbor."

The 39,691 square-foot Food Lion, off Bishop Road, faces Wesleyan Boulevard and is adjacent to the north end of the Wesleyan campus. Food Lion has expressed a desire to partner with the College for student internships and part-time employees.

N.C. Wesleyan is an independent, four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The College offers bachelor’s degrees in 22 majors on the main campus in Rocky Mount. It also offers an Adult Degree Program geared to help working adults finish their bachelor’s degrees in several disciplines on the Rocky Mount campus and at sites in Raleigh, Durham, and Goldsboro.
