Barnhill Appointed to N.C. Wesleyan Board of Trustees Rocky Mount, N.C.--Robert E. Barnhill, Jr., president and chief executive officer of Barnhill Contracting Company, was appointed to North Carolina Wesleyan Colleges board of trustees at the boards May meeting. Barnhill, of Tarboro, has long been an active supporter of Wesleyans programs and activities. He explained his decision to serve as a trustee of the College, saying, "Theres a place--a need--for this size school in the system. More importantly, I think the College really adds a lot to Rocky Mount ... to the quality of life. The College offers many great activities, including events at the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts." Barnhill also expressed his interest in Wesleyans growing Adult Degree Program. "Theres a definite need there," he said, "and for those who want to improve themselves and their educational background and still work, it is certainly a great opportunity." Barnhill has long been recognized as a community leader and public servant. The Tarboro-Edgecombe Chamber of Commerce named him distinguished citizen for 1999, citing his assistance to Hurricane Floyd flood victims. He is also highly visible in local organizations and professional associations. He has served on various boards, including the Carolinas Gateway Partnership, Tarboro Community Outreach, the Mary Frances Center, the University of North Carolinas Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the East Carolina Boy Scouts of America. An East Carolina University business administration graduate, Barnhill began working with the company built by his father, the late Robert Barnhill, Sr., who introduced his son to hard work and community service. Today, Barnhill Contracting is among the nations leaders in heavy highway construction, commercial building, and commercial grading and paving. The company has been recognized with distinguished rankings in prominent engineering and business journals. The company employs 975 people seasonally and performs work primarily in North Carolina and Virginia. Company offices are in Tarboro, Raleigh, Fayetteville, Elizabeth City, Rocky Mount, and Kitty Hawk, N.C. Charles E. Glassick, N.C. Wesleyans interim president, said, "Robert Barnhill will be a great asset to the board of trustees. He can provide outstanding business expertise and experience, and also he has a genuine interest in helping Wesleyan serve the people of our community." Barnhill and his wife, Penny, live in Tarboro. They have three grown children. North Carolina Wesleyan is an independent, four-year liberal arts college affiliated with The United Methodist Church. The college offers bachelor's degrees in 22 majors to students on the main campus in Rocky Mount. Wesleyan also offers an Adult Degree Program geared to help working adults complete their bachelor's degrees in several disciplines at sites in Raleigh, Durham, Goldsboro, and Rocky Mount. # # # |
