N. C. Wesleyan College Commencement Held May 12

Rocky Mount, NC -- North Carolina Wesleyan College held its 37th annual commencement exercises Saturday, May 12, on the lawn in front of the Braswell Administration Building. A total of 236 students received their degrees in a wide range of disciplines, covering 22 majors. Of the total graduates, 143 were from Wesleyan’s Adult Degree Program. Ninety three traditional students also were graduated. The May graduates are in addition to the 150 students the College graduated last December.

N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper delivered the commencement address. The Nash County native told the graduates, "Make sure you have a social conscience." He advised them to use their degrees to help make the world a better place. "Extend a hand to those who need it," he said. "Be active in your church...be a volunteer...give of yourself to others."

Student speakers were senior class president Kenneth Childs, a computer information systems major from Northampton, MA, and Gustavo Rodriguez, a business administration major from Raleigh’s Adult Degree Program.

Childs told of coming to N.C. Wesleyan as a freshman. "I didn’t know anybody," he said, "but you become a family here and make friends for life." He thanked the College’s faculty and staff, as well as parents, for their encouragement and support.

Rodriguez told of being motivated by his fellow adult classmates in the Adult Degree Program. He challenged students to "apply what we’ve learned with passion, commitment, and dedication."

Also during the ceremony, education professor Marshall Brooks, Vice President for Academic Affairs, paid tribute to the work of Interim President Charles E. Glassick and his wife, Mary Glassick, for their contributions throughout the past year.

N.C. Wesleyan offers its Adult Degree Program at teaching sites in Raleigh, Durham and Goldsboro, as well as in Rocky Mount. Non-traditional students have the same opportunity as traditional N.C. Wesleyan students to participate in a challenging curriculum taught by well-qualified faculty.

Wesleyan was a pioneer in offering adult degree programs in North Carolina, starting an "evening division" in October 1980. The College’s Adult Degree Program currently offers bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration, Justice Studies, Accounting, Psychology and Computer Information Systems.

N. C. Wesleyan College is an independent, four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The College offers bachelor’s degrees in 22 majors to traditional students on the main campus in Rocky Mount. The Adult Degree Program offers classes at teaching sites in Raleigh, Durham, Goldsboro and Rocky Mount.
