NCWC Orientation Brings Families to Rocky Mount July 14-15

Rocky Mount, NC—Friday and Saturday, July 14 and 15, approximately 400 students, parents, and family members are attending summer orientation for first-year and transfer students at North Carolina Wesleyan College. This orientation the College had the most students ever for a summer orientation, 150, including 30 walk-ins. Students traveled from as far away as Mississippi and New York. The largest group of students at summer orientation are from North Carolina, 72, followed by the group from Virginia, 26. Other states represented include Maryland, New Jersey, South Carolina, Florida, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. One student came from Greece. The College has other international students who aren’t here this weekend.

NC Wesleyan has always attracted a healthy number of out-of-state students to the College. The traditional student body, around 800 students, is typically made up of about 54 percent North Carolina natives and 46 percent from out-of-state and foreign countries. The majority of the North Carolina students usually hail from the area from Durham east to the coast. Another approximately 1100 adult students take classes year-round at teaching sites in Raleigh, Durham, Goldsboro, and on the main campus in Rocky Mount.

On Friday, the incoming students and their families will tour the campus, meet in small groups about residence hall living, academic advising, and college transitions, and enjoy a reception at the president’s house and dinner in the College cafeteria. After entertainment in the Hartness Student Center Friday night, the students will spend the night in the residence halls on campus, while families will stay in area motels.

After breakfast in the cafeteria, Saturday’s sessions will focus on the Wesleyan Experience, with the orientation coming to a close at noon.

During orientation, students are introduced to the College’s program for first-time freshmen. The aim of the program is to get students connected with each other and with the life of the College. First-year students are assigned to 15-person learning groups who will take three of their classes together for the fall semester. One of their shared classes is College 101, staffed by a professor and student mentors. In College 101 they will sharpen their time management skills, their presentation skills, their computer skills, attend some performing arts events, and together they’ll perform some community service project. They’ll discuss goal-setting.

A fall orientation for all incoming first-year students is scheduled for August 25-27, before classes begin August 29 for fall semester. During fall orientation the students will be assigned to their specific first-year learning groups and meet together Friday through Monday. On Monday, August 28, the students will be able to finalize their class schedules and prepare for the fall semester.

North Carolina Wesleyan College is an independent, four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The College offers bachelor’s degrees in 22 majors to traditional-aged students on the Rocky Mount campus. Wesleyan also offers an adult degree program geared to working adults, with classes offered in Rocky Mount, and at additional teaching sites in Raleigh, Goldsboro, and Durham/RTP.
