NC Wesleyan Receives Grant from AT&T

Rocky Mount, NC—North Carolina Wesleyan College has received a grant from AT&T. It is part of a $50,000 grant awarded jointly to NC Wesleyan College, Louisburg College, and St. Augustine’s College. The money is intended to increase the use of technology in each school’s respective first-year program, and thereby improve student satisfaction and retention. The portion for NC Wesleyan amounts to $15,850.

The Independent College Fund of North Carolina informed its constituent members that AT&T would look favorably on grant proposals jointly submitted by several of the private schools in North Carolina working together to meet a common need. Wesleyan Director of Grants Gwen Wright, along with representatives from Louisburg College and St. Augustine’s College, submitted the successful team proposal to AT&T.

Louisburg College is a two-year college, whose students frequently transfer to Saint Augustine’s and to North Carolina Wesleyan College. First-year Program Director Kathy Wilson said, "With the objective of increasing retention between the first and second years a student is in college, the colleges hope to find that teaching basics through technology in the first-year program positively impacts retention rates between the first and second years." Thus, it would also affect graduation rates at NC Wesleyan and Saint Augustine’s and transfer rates at Louisburg College. The AT&T project is the first step in the colleges’ plan to expand the technological component of the first-year experience to all first-year students.

North Carolina Wesleyan is an independent, four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The College offers bachelor’s degrees in 22 majors to traditional-aged students on the Rocky Mount campus. NC Wesleyan also offers an adult degree program geared to help working adults finish their bachelor’s degrees in several disciplines, with classes in Rocky Mount, and at additional teaching sites in Raleigh, Goldsboro, and Durham/RTP.
