First Gravely Scholars to Enter NC Wesleyan Rocky Mount, NCThe Gravely Scholarship Fund is established to give at least two rising juniors the opportunity to earn their undergraduate degrees at North Carolina Wesleyan College. In the Fall of 1998, the Gravely Upper Class Scholarship (GUCS) program was started to give four students, two students from Edgecombe Community College and two from Nash Community College, tuition, fee, and book expenses for the two years needed to earn their associate degrees at the two community colleges. Preference for the scholarships goes to North Carolina students living in Nash and Edgecombe counties who have established high financial need. At the end of two years, the four students competed for two full Gravely scholarships to pursue their bachelors degrees at North Carolina Wesleyan. The two students not selected for the full Gravely scholarships to NC Wesleyan were provided with alternative financial aid packages to assist them in attending the College to complete their undergraduate studies. Sandi Proctor and Jennifer Batts are the first two Gravely Upper Class Scholars. They will both enter NC Wesleyan in the upcoming Fall Semester 2000. They were among the four students awarded Gravely scholarships to attend Nash and Edgecombe community colleges. Proctor, a student in accounting from Tarboro, was selected to be the first recipient of the Gravely Upper Class Scholarship to NCWC from Edgecombe Community College. She completes her associates degree in accounting at ECC in May and will then enroll in the accounting program at NC Wesleyan. Sandis husband is Jay Proctor and they are the proud parents of Brittany, 8, and Michael, 5. Her parents are Edward & Phyllis Wheeler, of Roanoke Rapids, and Mr. Wheeler is an alumnus of NC Wesleyan, class of 78. Sandi credits the Gravely scholarship for helping her succeed, "There were many times when I felt I couldnt do it all, with the responsibilities of family and everything, but it was the Gravely scholarship that kept me going." Jennifer Batts was the first recipient of the Gravely Upper Class Scholarship to NC Wesleyan to graduate from Nash Community College. A Nashville resident, Jennifer Batts completed her associates degree in arts/college transfer at NCC. She will also be pursuing a degree in accounting at NC Wesleyan. Her parents are Mr. & Mrs. Glenn Batts of Nashville. "This scholarship fund creates a wonderful opportunity for talented but disadvantaged students from Nash and Edgecombe counties to go to college on full scholarships, first through the two counties community colleges for their associate degrees, and then finishing up at NC Wesleyan for their bachelors degrees," said NC Wesleyan President John White. "The Gravely Foundation is making a significant contribution toward educating the citizens of the two counties through this new fund." This new scholarship fund is created in addition to the Gravely Honors Scholarships, a number of which are given each year to North Carolina Wesleyan students. The locally administered Gravely Foundation is committed to helping individuals through the provision of educational opportunities. North Carolina Wesleyan is an independent, four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The College offers bachelors degrees in 22 majors to traditional-aged students on the Rocky Mount campus. NC Wesleyan also offers an adult degree program geared to help working adults finish their bachelors degrees in several disciplines, with classes in Rocky Mount, and at additional teaching sites in Raleigh, Goldsboro, and Durham. The College is planning to introduce an accelerated master of business administration program in the fall 2000 to the adult students in the Triangle area. # # # |
